Magic and Monsters

When we’re children, we see magic all around us. There’s an open door connecting the natural world and unlimited imagination. Then the monsters come- adults projecting their fears, failures, bitterness, hate, unhealed wounds, unmet expectations, unfulfilled dreams, and all the perversions of life they have learned from the monsters that have gone before them.

When Jesus warned people to never harm a child, He didn’t mean just physically. He meant to not to crush their spirit from being able to see, think, laugh, and love as He does. That’s also what He meant by us keeping, or recovering, a child’s heart so that you can see His kingdom your whole life. It’s not just about getting into heaven. It’s seeing His magic again, here and now.

You may have been deeply damaged by the darkest of evils. But healing you and fighting the monsters are two of the things Jesus does best. A wounded child tries to protect his or her wound at first, but then trusts the parent to heal it, even if it’s going to hurt a little. Open your heart and trust Him to heal you. Physically, emotionally, spiritually- He will restore your child-heart, and empower you to face the monsters in His strength. His magic.

The picture is from a squatter’s building in Jamaica, multiple families living in condemned conditions. The words are only half the truth- the monsters don’t make you stronger because you learn to fight like them. They make you stronger because for every attack, you learn to stop focusing on the monsters, and live in the far greater grace- the far greater magic- that God makes available for you every time.

“Let the children come to Me! Do not hinder them, for to them belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And He took them in his arms and blessed them” (Mark 10)
