Counting your blessings isn’t a cute thing your Grandma says. It’s the front gate to living in peace, growing in joy, and loving people, even when they don’t love you back.
If you don’t celebrate your blessings, you’ll stress over everything that’s not. You’ll keep a record of what you’ve done for others, versus how little they’ve done for you. You’ll replay the few times you were recognized for your accomplishments, compared with others who you believe did less. You’ll stack your sacrifices against your wounds. You’ll focus on every offense, rejection, and betrayal until you either isolate yourself for fear of being hurt, or you attack everyone before they can. You’ll wear your pain like a hood and cloak. It’ll be all you can see through, and all people can see of you.
Thank God for one thing. Now another. And another. Let Him show you all He has done and is doing. See yourself, your circumstances, and all your relationships from His perspective. Lay the hood and cloak down. No, there’s no guarantee you won’t be hurt. But there is a covenant you will always be loved.
