Today isn’t just a get–through–it day. It’s upgrade day. There’s been too much evil going on in the world to let one opportunity pass by to increase your ability to live in God’s peace and power. I was reading psalm 62, and something jumped out to me:
“He alone is my rock and my salvation, my defense. I won’t be shaken—much. Let my heart and mind, my very soul, wait in quiet, confident rest in God, for my all hope is in Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, and my defense. I won’t be shaken AT ALL” (Psalm 62.2,5-6).
The psalm starts out with David saying he believes God is a protector, but he still feels completely overwhelmed by what’s going on. “I won’t be shaken—much.” If you read the whole thing you’ll see David is hurt and frustrated by people who carelessly accept and pass on lies spoken against him. They say nice things to his face, but behind his back they curse him. We’ve all experienced how debilitating lies and betrayal can be.
But then David turns his thoughts to God again. He focuses his mind, will, and emotions on who God is. He silences the anxiety, stress, and frustration by seeing how awesome He has been in His life. His definition of hope transforms from an outcome his fear and anger demand, to a confident expectation of seeing more of the goodness of God. That shift upgrades his mindset, and his perception of all he’s facing. He rephrases his words, “I won’t be shaken at all,” as a declaration of faith in God’s love for him.
This is the upgrade for anyone experiencing an overwhelming situation. As you bring all your confusion, pain, anger, and fear to Him, you get to exchange it for revelations of His peace, grace, rest, and joy, transforming how you see God, yourself, and your circumstances. Each opportunity you have to live in and from His presence, despite the difficulties going on around you, upgrades your ability to bring yourself to a place of peace faster and faster. From feeling helpless and isolated, God is making you powerful and brilliant.
