Perfectionism is Paralysis

Matthew 5:48 reads “be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect.” But that doesn’t mean without mistake. It means to be whole and mature, full of integrity and honor.  God isn’t cruel. He doesn’t give love, then take it away if you’re not “perfect.” You are unconditionally loved and accepted, and this life is a continual revelation of just how much.

Though you should do everything as well as possible, God loves your courage far more than your skill. In the parable of the talents (Matt. 25:14:30), it wasn’t a lack of ability that caused the third person to bury their allotment instead of investing it. That person was driven by a fear of failure and rejection, and it paralyzed him from experiencing what was possible in daring with God.

Even if it feels like it right now, you’re not paralyzed. Take a breath. Take two or three. Thank Jesus for one good thing in your life. And another. You can feel His presence. Let His goodness push out every fear, doubt, wound, and offense. You can hear His voice. You can think, speak, and move with Him.

You’re not controlled by the expectations of others. You don’t have to live in fear of failing or being rejected today, or any other day. You are loved, you are blessed, and you are brilliant. Be whole as your Father in heaven is whole, and live like it.
