Your Will Be Done

When we pray “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven,” we usually focus on the heaven–to–earth part, wanting the good stuff going on there to happen here, too. But we often overlook the “will” part. Praying for His will to be done isn’t about waiting around for Him to do something amazing. He brings heaven to earth through us, through our will in agreement with His.

“Live in growing demonstration of your salvation with genuine awe and deep reverence. For it is God who is working in you, empowering your will and ability to accomplish all His good and loving intentions for you. Do everything without complaining and doubting those kind intentions, and you will become innocent and honoring, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding tightly to His words of life” (Philippians 2:12b–16a, my paraphrase).

So what does this mean? Know Him. Learn His heart, His character, and nature every day. Let who He is continually transform who you are. Then live. See, think, speak, and act in and from His presence. Make confident decisions and take bold risks that reflect His audacious love for you and everyone in your world.

God is joyfully and completely confident in Himself and in all His plans. And here’s the thing—He has chosen to demonstrate that fearless confidence through YOU. So, will to do something good, and you’ll make room for Him to do something miraculous.
