In a film, I think there are at least three different movies. The one in the script, the one that is shot, and the one that comes out of editing. Originally, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” was over three hours long, and Ferris was a pretty dark, cynical character. In editing, they cut out most of the pessimistic parts of his character, and ended up with a classic.
Your life also needs editing. Things don’t always go to script—you may have scenes in your head that don’t fit the story of who you truly are, but you keep rehearsing them and letting them control your identity and your story.
God is a brilliant director, but He’s also an amazing editor. He knows your story better than you, and He brings grace, truth, healing, and joy to edit your pain and shame. He’ll take you through the scenes of your life with all you need to be forgiven and forgive others, to be free and healed, and to think differently about who you are and what’s possible.
Editing doesn’t ignore what happened, but it leaves it all on the cutting–room floor, powerless to define you. Spend some time with Jesus today in the editing room, and let Him bring out the classic that you are.
“His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.’ But his father said to the servants, ‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet'” (Luke 15:21–22).
