Capture Your Thoughts

Sitting in the dark under a cracked–open window, praying against the wind driving this insatiable inferno toward more of our neighbors’ homes. I realize more than ever the need to capture my thoughts—the negative ones, so they don’t run away with truth, peace, and joy, and the ones that agree with what God says is possible, so I can grow them into reality with Him.

Turn your mindset from being controlled by what’s wrong to being captivated by what’s right—the loving, healing, transforming thoughts Jesus has for you. I know it’s not easy, especially for those who’ve experienced great loss. But I promise there’s more than enough grace to give you the strength you don’t have on your own.

Start by letting go of fear. Even if you don’t feel it, make it a declaration of freedom from anxiety you hear yourself say out loud. Dwell on gratitude and majesty, on every good thing still in your life, and everything God wants to be for you right now. Choose to stay in awe and wonder, refusing to let bitterness and cynicism suck you back into the dark.

Once you’ve captured your thoughts, you can unleash His. Stir up faith, hope, love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness in yourself, and give them away to everyone you meet.

“Dismantle negative imaginations and high emotional and mental walls that keep you from really knowing God. Let every thought be captivated in obedience to Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord. ‘They are plans for wholeness, peace, and favor—I never have thoughts of evil toward you. I am here to give you a future of hope'” (Jeremiah 29:11).
