“God is faithful. He won’t let you be tempted beyond what you can bear . . . He will provide a way out to sustain you” (1 Cor. 10:13).
We’ve all heard or read the saying, “God won’t give you more than you can handle.” Most assume it’s a quote from the Bible, but it’s not. This world can be so hard at times, so much more difficult than our minds can make sense of. But God isn’t the one trying to hurt you. He doesn’t curse, afflict, or kill to teach you a lesson, nor is he piling on more and more to see how much you can take.
Through his death and resurrection, Jesus has made a way for every person to be able to choose redemption, salvation, transformation—every good “tion” there is. But this world is still suffering from a lack of God’s goodness and grace. And though we carry them in us because of Jesus, we all have experiences with the lack of them every day.
The enemy of your soul will try to exploit how you respond to that lack. When you’re faced with difficult circumstances, he tries to overwhelm your heart and mind to tempt you out of your identity, out of who you are in Jesus. Instead of bringing yourself to a place of peace in God’s goodness and grace, you focus on lack, or potential lack, which gives control to fear, bitterness, self–pity, and whatever else the enemy is throwing at you. You spend all your energy just trying to alleviate the pain and survive.
This is where God steps in front of the devil and says, “Hell, no.” With every trial of life you face, God provides a way to deal with it in his presence. Instead of getting overwhelmed by fear, stress, or frustration, you can choose to be overwhelmed by love, peace, and joy. Whatever you’re facing right now may seem all consuming, but God is right there with you, offering all you need to overcome it and actually upgrade your identity, rather than having it crushed.
There is certainly lack in this world. But you are the answer to the lack, not its victim. Living from upgrade to upgrade, “from glory to glory” (2 Cor. 3:18), in Jesus is what will transform the lack into life.
