I’m thinking about a dream I had a while ago, in which Angi and I were hunting vampires. No, she wasn’t wearing a cheerleader uniform. And before you comment, neither was I. These vampires didn’t suck out your blood. Each one would drain a person’s identity, and their venom numbed a victim’s belief in God. People could be restored, but they had to want to be, and their unbelief made that difficult—they were increasingly calloused, bitter, and cynical, becoming more and more like the vampires themselves.
The key to turning people back was to demonstrate a greater love, life, and light in God than the darkness the vampires were creating, breaking their influence. Those that were healed glowed brightly, making them nearly immune to further attacks, because the vampires hated the light. If there was enough light, the vampires popped like balloons.
The enemy’s plans usually involve trying to overwhelm and exhaust you physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Not just until you don’t want to fight anymore, but until you don’t care about anyone or anything. The greatest danger to your identity isn’t necessarily the thing attacking you, it’s a relinquished heart.
Remember who you are, and whose you are. Don’t give in to the lie you’re alone and have to rely on your own strength. God is with you right now, right where you are. He’s not holding back, waiting for you to perfect your life. He’s waiting for you to let him be perfect in your life.
“David was deeply distressed . . . but he strengthened himself in the Lord” (1 Sam. 30:6).
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deut. 31:6).
“The Lord is my light and my salvation, so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? When those full of evil try to attack and devour me, they’re the ones who will get overwhelmed and fail” (Psalm 27:1-2).
As you look for ways to be love, life, and light with God, I pray you hear popping sounds all day.
