The Way Out

When you feel down, it’s easy to let negative thoughts pull you deeper into the dark. You let circumstances control your emotions, constantly compare yourself to others, and continuously rehearse and punish your own failures and mistakes. Your God–given identity starts to slip away as bitter people, unresolved situations, and self–pity shape your reality.

Remember who God says you are. I know that seems simplistic, and even hokey, but maybe that’s part of what makes having childlike faith so powerful and profound. Right now, if you’re able, take a moment alone with the Lord. Ask him to show you one good thing about yourself. I know that may seem like selfish pseudoscience, but you’re not trying to twist God’s love to justify your own choices. You’re agreeing with who you are in Christ, so you can see yourself, and everything else, as he does.

Recognize another good thing God has put in your heart, or done in your life. And another. And one more. Now say them out loud. Even if you’re at work and have to do it quietly, speak aloud. Allow those thoughts and declarations to lead you deeper and more powerfully into God’s presence, until every thought you have with him becomes a step out of the valley you’ve been in.

If you’re having trouble hearing how amazing and valuable God thinks you are, start here:

“I am the Lord who heals you and makes you whole” (Exodus 15:26).

“You are my greatest treasure” (Deut. 7:6).

“I have come to you so you may have life, and have it to its fullest” (John 10:10).

“This is the secret: Jesus, the hope of glory, lives in you” (Col. 1:27).

“If anyone is in Christ, he or she is a new creation. The old life is gone, and everything has become new” (2 Cor. 5:17).

“You are the light of the world” (Matt. 5:14).

“The cords of death entangled me, and floods of destruction swept over me. In my distress I cried out to the Lord for help. He reached down from heaven and took hold of me. He pulled me out of deep waters, and led me to a wide–open place of safety. He rescued me because he delights in me” (from Psalm 18).

  1. This speaks so powerfully to my heart and soul today. Calmness and peace to all. The Spirit is moving all over this as we drink deeply of this well. ‘ He delights in me’, yes Lord. Amen.
