Justice Needs Companions

“O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is just, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).

Seek justice, especially for those who can’t defend themselves. But don’t do it without humility and mercy (a word which means love, kindness, and goodness). Without mercy, justice often descends into vengeance. And without humility, justice can become its own corrupt, arrogant version of the darkness it’s supposed to be bringing light to.

You largely become what you give your attention to. If you give your heart to constantly rehearsing what’s gone wrong, and waste your mind thinking about what could go wrong, you’ll forget the power of mercy and humility you have in God’s presence. Justice will get defined as punishing and controlling anyone and anything that scares you.
