“Be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16). This verse used to make me think holiness was something to be achieved through perfect performance. But every time I tried, I failed. However, no matter how badly I messed up, God never said to me, “It’s your fault, and your consequences. Good luck.” What he has said to me all my life is, “Come to me, you who are so wearied and burdened down, and I will give you rest.”
What would it do to your view of God, and yourself, if you didn’t see that verse as an angry, pointed–finger command, but as a joyful, open–armed invitation?
Holiness is not sin management, perfect behavior, or religious conformity. It’s viewing yourself as sacred to God, and valuing others as much as he does. Holiness is thinking, speaking, and doing everything with faith, hope, and love in mind. Holiness is the life Jesus won for you so you can become like him.
You get another opportunity today to experience God’s truly amazing grace, and love people like he does. Live it well.
