Choose Your Battleground

Don’t just pick your battles—choose your battleground. The enemy will do anything to get you to abandon the limitless strength of God’s presence to exhaustively strive on the bloody fields of bitterness, hopelessness, and fear. The situation you’re facing isn’t even so much about the fight itself as it is learning to live in ever–increasing awareness of God’s peace, joy, and love for you, where the enemy has no power.

I wrote that paragraph on another platform, and someone commented: “Great. Now, how do I do that? I mean, it’s very simple to do it momentarily. How do you stick to it when you’re upset and your brain reverts to stupid, selfish thoughts?”

It’s a good question. My response was this: “We’re going through a very difficult season, and I wrote this for myself more than anyone else. In part, how I do this is not getting offended that there may be a hundred moments a day to decide to stay on God’s fields instead of frustration, fear, or anger.

I make the decision over and over- not once, or even once a day. And when I fail, and realize it, I don’t stay in the enemy’s territory to punish myself for failing, I go back to God and let him put me back into his peace, joy, and love. And that isn’t always an easy thing, but it’s worth it; staying angry and bitter means losing too much.”

The flowchart is something I made a while ago for myself. I’m usually less of a linear thinker, but this often helps remind me that at any moment I can choose to be with God, no matter what’s happened, or where I’ve wandered.
