The Two Trees

Everyday we nourish ourselves with fruit from either the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, or the tree of life. Consuming from the tree of knowledge means you choose to stand alone to determine the value of everything and everyone you encounter, relying only on your own intellect, history, and judgments.

Though we may have a sense of right and wrong, unchecked arrogance makes us think we can understand the world from our own limited views, without God’s perspective. Apart from living in God’s grace, peace, truth, and love, we judge the actions of others and ourselves according to our own fears, pain, and desires. Grace and love can only be given in degrees, and will lessen with every violation against them.

Eating from the tree of life means living intentionally from God’s presence. It’s learning how to respond to your circumstances in His Spirit, and looking to Him for meaning in your experiences.

Everyday life in God is keeping your heart open to His grace and love to make you more and more complete, and for whatever’s been broken to be made whole and grow. It’s constant communion with Jesus, living in His incredible view of you and what’s possible in your life.

  1. Was thinking about this earlier today. It is about relationship with Jesus. That is the only difference in the two trees. Both look identical in form and often in name. One produces words, actions, and behaviors out of relationship with God. The other produces those apart from that relationship. When we eat of the tree of life, every activity of life is centered in communion with Him. From the tree of good and evil, we do things of our strength and understanding apart from Him.
