Leaving Disappointment Behind

Most days, you’re growing—thriving—in your ability to live in God’s joy, peace, and goodness. But not every day is an easy or happy one, and deep disappointment still happens. It’s okay to let yourself feel it. Just don’t stay there.

The longer you dwell on loss, rejection, failure, and lack, the further you’ll descend into judging yourself and others by increasingly difficult standards of performance. It’s a way of keeping yourself from being disappointed again—if people are incapable of pleasing you, they can’t let you down. Live that way long enough, and not only will no one ever be good enough to earn your approval, you’ll never trust anyone with genuine intimacy, including God.

You can spend another day looking to judge people, cities, and nations to protect your fears. Or, you can look for the opportunities God is giving you to release your disappointment, pain, and fears to him, and let him lead you back into all the joy, peace, goodness, grace, and love he has for you.
