So, Christmas came and went faster than a plate of sugar cookies at an office party, and you’re making plans to hit the gym, get a jump on your taxes, and read something longer than a tweet. But before you make any resolutions, have a revelation.
Most of us like Christmas so much because we give ourselves permission to actually be at peace, in a world that for one brief moment expects nothing more of us than to enjoy our relationships and traditions.
I love Christmas, and it will always be special. But so is every other day. Jesus isn’t just at peace—he is peace, and I can’t let my awareness of that peace be limited by the expectations of the world around me. Every moment of every day he makes it possible to live in and give away an infinitely greater joy, wholeness, and rest regardless of my circumstances.
Rather than making resolutions to work hard enough to meet the world’s expectations, allow yourself to live and grow in the gift of peace you already have in God. From that place, every goal you set will be an energizing blessing instead of a draining burden, and, you can genuinely enjoy a cookie once in a while.
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit all your ways to the Lord, and trust in him. He will help you” (Psalm 37:4-5).
