The moments we have to deal with disappointment can be some of the most pivotal of our lives. How we respond to the frustration of denied acceptance, success, and desire can turn our hearts to brittle stone, or, make them so strong and pliant their capacity for love has no limit. The turning point is in whether we choose to hold God responsible for our pain, or whether we’re willing to trust him despite what little we can see.
The heart can close down around the fear-driven demand for our unresolved experiences and emotions to be answered. But it opens and grows when we provide a resting place for it called “wonder.” Wonder is a realm of God‘s grace where hopes and dreams and questions that are temporarily out of reach can be put confidently in Jesus’ hands. Wonder trusts him for the peace to release what we don’t know, the joy to appreciate what we do, and the love to renew our minds and restore our hearts.
I pray every disappointment in what hasn’t happened, and every heartbreak from what shouldn’t have, is soaked in so much wonder, grace, and love they turn into delight in all God is saying to your heart, and confidence in all he’s doing in your life.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
