With all your mind, all your strength, and all your soul, let Jesus see into all your heart. Start with the place you keep your definition of love locked away. I know that may seem unsettling, but it’s time. You’ve come as far as you can with love as you’ve known it. Yes, it’s a leap of faith, but it’s right into his arms. You can trust him to heal, renew, and transform your heart for the next part of your life.
Allow him to remove the expectations you’ve had of others, especially those which have developed out insecurity. Let him deal with any unhealthy needs attached to fears of rejection and punishment, and coping habits rooted in fears of loss and failure. Let him cut deeply. All the way to the conditions you’ve placed on love to protect yourself from getting hurt.
This may take time. Partly because there are many things to work on, but mostly because Jesus is so loving, kind, and completely committed to fully empowering and equipping your heart for every relationship, circumstance, and promise in your life. No matter how many days, weeks, months, or even years it takes, I know the love Jesus has for you to live and grow in is worth every moment of this process with him. You’re not just learning more about love; you’re becoming love.
“The word of God is alive and powerful, and pierces more sharply than a two-edged sword. It will even penetrate to the very core of our being where soul and spirit, bone and marrow meet. It interprets and reveals the true thoughts and secret motives of our hearts” (Hebrews 4:12).
