What we think we want from the Comforter is validation of our pain and fear. But what the Comforter knows we need is transformation of our hearts and minds.
“Then Jesus said, ‘As planned, my Father will send the Comforter, the Holy Spirit. He will teach you all you need to know, and remind you of everything I’ve said.
I must return to my Father, but I’m leaving you with my peace, which is your nothing-missing-nothing-broken confidence in my unceasing love for you. I’ll never abandon or forget you the way this world can. So don’t allow your hearts to become anxious and afraid. Let them be at rest’” (John 14:26-27, paraphrased).
