I had a dream in which a man stood in an empty stream bed, dry because of the stone dam in front of him. The man became offended there was no water, and began recounting all the disappointments, offenses, and wounds from his life. And with every one, another rock appeared in the dam.
Then the scene rewound and changed. Instead of rehearsing bad things that had happened in the past, he thanked God for one good thing in his life. And then another. And another. With each declaration of God’s blessing, grace, and love, a rock came loose from the wall, until the life-giving water was released.
Before adding a rock to the wall, take a step back. Breathe. In natural terms, you deserve to pick one up and whip it at someone’s head. But a far better satisfaction is possible, and an infinitely greater state of being. Thank God for one thing. Let that lead to another, and another, until you feel God’s goodness break through into your life like rushing water.
