Sing

Many people have music running through their heads much of the time, even if it’s just in the background somewhere. Often it’s the last song you heard, or a music-associated memory, and sometimes it’s a creative reaction to what’s going on around you. My Dad used to sing every time he went into the walk-in refrigerator when we were catering. I think it helped him release a little stress, and was his way of lightening the intensity in the kitchen. Either that, or he just really liked the acoustics. My wife wrote a song she used to sing on particularly frigid days working outside for an airline. “My Ass is Cold” is still one of my favorite tunes.

I believe in God’s “Let there be light,” music, math, and miracles were released into the foundations of the universe. I think music is still one of God’s favorite ways to speak to our souls, and one of his most powerful ways of speaking life into emptiness.

What have you been singing? What’s the theme song you’re declaring over your life? Is it a reaction to your circumstances, or is it the one God has been singing over you? “For the Lord your God is living among you, the Champion who will save you. He will celebrate you with gladness. With his love, he will silence all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs” (Zephaniah 3:17).

Turn the volume down on all the negative sounds.

Listen for the music that brings you to life.

Hear God sing who you are to him, and who he wants to be for you.

Sing with him.

Keep singing until there’s light.
