Expecting to Become

What you expect out of today is pretty much what you’re going to get. That isn’t some big revelation, but it’s amazing how often I need to remind myself. I guess that’s the point, isn’t it—learning to become more aware of what’s important.

For me, that always begins with asking God who I’m becoming in him, and what of his character and nature he wants me to focus on. He may be the same yesterday, today, and forever, but I’m not. I’m supposed to be growing in him, becoming more like him, going with him from “glory to glory” (2 Cor. 3:18). If I’m always trying to relate to him as the person I used to be, I’ll miss who he wants to be for me now.

When I listen with my heart first to who God wants to be for me, I see myself as he does—not in all my past fears and failures, but for who I’m becoming in his love, grace, peace, wisdom, and joy. His presence overwhelms my overwhelmed mind. My circumstances become nothing compared to who God wants to be for me in them, and my expectations of today change. I pray yours do too, and today is a greater glory kind of day.

“My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I’m listening’” (Psalm 27:8).
