Awe Through

When I was diagnosed with cancer, I felt lost in a storm of fear and uncertainty. Wondering how I was going to deal with this, I heard God speak to my overwhelmed heart: “My son, first, let your awe of my love become greater than your fear of anything else.”

If the awe of who God is isn’t your greatest reality, then your circumstances will be. They’ll dictate what you think, how you feel, and the way you relate to people. Cultivating a mind in awe of all his love for you and others puts every problem into perspective, and enables you to deal with them in his grace, hope, peace, joy, and wisdom.

Today is another challenging day. But it doesn’t get to control you with fear and hopelessness. You get to navigate this dark valley with the light of his love and the compass of his wisdom. That’s hokey, but I don’t care. It’s absolutely the picture in my head. You are the light of the world, so be it.

Take some deep breaths. Ask Jesus for another revelation of his love, and soak in it until it overwhelms every fear. Be confident in his love, discerning with information, and wise in your choices. Keep an ongoing conversation with him about who he is for you, how he sees you, and all the good that’s possible in difficult times.

I post this flowchart a couple times a year, and today seems like a good time to again. It’s what I saw in my head after hearing him invite me to awe over fear:
